Although this blog doesn’t usually promote movies, we are about communications and video and advice (and of course creating great communication experiences.) So go see Amazing Grace – opening Feb 23rd, and you’ll see some great examples of communicating and reaching the emotions of an audience - the goal of every message.
I’ve been fortunate to see two previews of Amazing Grace, the story of William Wilberforce and the abolition of slavery. I predict that this movie will be up for several Academy Awards next year. It is inspiring, epochal, and very well done. And has some lessons...
Amazing Grace is a wonderful example of three communicating techniques that we espouse:
1. SHARPs - Language and Metaphor particularly. Notice in several scenes in Parliament, how often a sharp retort or a colorful use of language stops the strong opposition cold. Also note the interweaving of stories, and the powerful, albeit brief story of John Newton, the reprobate turned preacher who wrote the famous hymn that gives title to the film, Amazing Grace.
2. Leadership - William Wilberforce had a vision, and overcome great odds with persistence. And he knew how to communicate to mobilize resources for his cause. A great example of singleness of purpose and focus - key ingredients to any leader, and any powerful message.
3. Time - in speaking we must always be aware of time, compress time, and use time creatively. This film collapses time, and jumps in time, and is a great example how we do not have to be linear and chronological in our communications - and can keep a listener (and viewer) engaged, absorbed, and captivated.
Also the film had great acting, a great story of faith - and above all excellence. Go see it.
